Janis Joplin, sin duda el miembro más conocido de "Big Brother...", pertenece a dos exclusivos clubs de grandes del rock: 1) a los que se quedaron por el camino fruto de las drogas, y 2) a los que se murieron a los 27.

Cuenta la leyenda (siempre según el crítico musical Mark Stanytrew, de quien estoy empezando a desconfiar) que Janis Joplin hizo un pacto con un hechicero en los pantanos de Lousiana, de tal modo que cambió su alma al diablo por un alma negra (Black Soul en inglés, lo que tiene connotaciones más musicales). Su éxito a partir de este pacto de sangre fue fulgurante. Sin embargo, Janis, consciente años después de lo que había hecho, trató de salir de la heroína, y grabó un disco de redención magnífico, Pearl, que posteriormente la crítica situaría entre los mejores de todos los tiempos.

Viendo el diablo que Janis se le podía escapar entre los dedos, acudió (de manera irónica) a la fiesta que daban los Ángeles del Infierno, a la que había sido invitada la cantante. Allí, tras diversos juegos que explica Stanytrew en su libro, consiguió inyectarla con una heroína de una pureza inusitada, causándola la muerte de manera casi instantánea por sobredosis. Dado que en última instancia fue ella la que tomó la decisión de colocarse, el diablo se aseguraba el alma de la cantante. Dicen que su espíritu en su camino al averno lazó un grito que dejó impregnada una marca en la grabación de estudio de "Cry Baby".
